Forced Swim

Description

Animals are placed in the tank typically for 15 minutes and monitored for when they reach a despair condition. This condition is indicated by the lack of any attempt by the animal to swim, climb or dive in the tank. This typically occurs after 10 minutes on the first day. On the second day, the animal is tested for a 5 minutes session. The animals tend to give up at around 2 minutes, thus demonstrating the learned helplessness model of depression.

Newly designed system uses popular MotorMonitor control chassis and software to capture swimming activity and readily demonstrates when the animal begins to give up its attempt for escape.
